Our new group of hens arrived last weekend and what a strange experience it must be after 14 months in a battery cage.
Within a few days they were roaming the field, scratching for grubs, exploring the hedgerow and eating natural food. We believe happy hens lay better eggs and our guests definately agree.

All the 60s festival committee members are now recovering from the stress of putting on a great event this year. The weather was fantastic, everybody loved the 6os vehicles and the bands went down a storm. We will all need a month before we think seriously about plans for next year. Keep an eye on the website, www.pickering60sfestival.co.uk for more details and for photos of this years event.

We are delighted that a song thrush has decided to nest in the rafters of our front porch.Yesterday we were greeted with a pile of leaves moss and twigs outside our front door, thinking it was one of our guests discarding debris after an enthusiastic days rambling in Dalby Forest we cleared it up and thought no more of it.Two hours later it was back, the culprit, a song thrush trying to make a nest. We are thrilled at the prospect of seeing this process so close to the house , especially as thrushes are sadly in decline. We will keep you informed with the progress, hopefully rewarding you with some photos of the fledglings.

On arriving at the field to feed the chickens this morning we saw our first returning swallow of the season. It is always a sign that summer is on it’s way we look forward to seeing many more as the week progresses.
