When we set out to create Ashfield House we sought out some of the most environmentally friendly technologies in a bid to reduce our impact on the planet.

  • Ashfield House is not connected to gas and is signed up to green tariff electricity. So apart from a carbon neutral log fire, we are a zero carbon B+B for heating, hot water, lighting and power.
  • A ground source heat pump harnesses slight differences in temperature in the soil beneath the garden to provide hot water and to heat Ashfield House via highly efficient, cosy underfloor heating.
  • Insulation levels exceed those required by even the latest building regulations, double glazed windows are argon - filled for even greater heat retention.
  • Sustainable logs, rather than gas fuel the lovely fire in the main lounge.
  • Low energy lighting is mostly used throughout.
  • Everything that can be recycled is recycled at Ashfield; all green waste is composted
  • Rainwater is harvested and filtered for use in lavatories, laundry and the garden.

Ashfield's location means visitors can leave their cars and access the many nearby attractions on foot.

These measures, combined with top quality fixtures and fittings such as beautiful oak doors and flooring, help create luxurious, comfortable surroundings with a minimum environmental impact.

Outside, in a bid to attract wildlife, we have given over a large section of the garden for use as a wildflower meadow, which has proven almost as popular with guests as it has to the wide range of wild birds that have flocked to it to feed.

We encourage you to record your sightings in the wildlife diary so we can build a good picture of the variety of birds that visit us

A range of next boxes- including versions designed for bats and little owls-have also been installed around the garden
